A few common threads have come to light over the last few weeks as business leaders adjust their transitional strategy and recovery:
Becoming agile and not fragile. If I hear “we don’t know what’s going to happen” one more time it will be once too much. Strong leaders are building multiple scenario plans for many eventualities and creating agile operating models so that they can flip between Plans A and Z. Others are relying too heavily on fate.
Building more resilient supply chains. Innovating through collaboration, up and down the value chains. Coming together for solutions, commercials and resources that increase value in the chain. You’re only as good as your weakest link and JIT has been shown to be fragile.
Greater focus on building liquidity into the balance sheet and less trading by the seat of our pants.
Investment in capex and infrastructure that accelerates digital transformation enabling automation and productivity gains. We have seen video calls free up time. AI, RPA and integrated solutions with improved networks and 5G can drive productivity further and provide a superior customer service.
Done well, restructuring and building greater flexibility into the workforce model can attract new skilled talent pools that need some stay at home flexibility. It provides access to much needed remote skills, improves wellbeing and reduces the need for presentee space and overhead. The pandemic has brought the benefits of wellness and productivity closer than ever.
